I always go to IY first, especially for produce, bulk foods and reasonably eco-friendly cleaning supplies, and then go to the supermarket to get everything else on the list. The staff is mostly great most of the time, but as others have noted, they occasionally hire a real jerk to work the register. Five stars for the inventory, four for the staff, and zero for the new hire.

I stopped patronizing IY a few years ago after consistently terrible customer service and returned to find the same. An employee with a hawkish affect passively aggressively asked me if I needed anything twice as she followed me around checking displays for missing items after I looked at them. Customer 'service' embodies the haughtiness, snoodery, and self-righteousness that are the worst qualities of Charlottesville.Aside from customer service issues, the selection of IY is awesome and there's no comparable grocery in Charlottesville. With better staff, I would come here regularly.
